To mark this exciting transition, we sat down with Finlay to discuss his journey and insights.

How long have you worked at Wellhead Electrical Supplies, and how did you get into your new role in sales support?

“I started working at Wellheads just over a year ago. I wanted a change in my career and felt it was the right time to make a move. After discussing my future goals with the directors, they helped me transition into the sales team. Moving to sales was a natural progression since my experience in the warehouse familiarised me with our products and processes.”

What skills from your previous role are helping you most in sales support?

“Communication is key in sales. Keeping customers and suppliers happy and informed is crucial. My experience with the computer system in the stores gave me a head start since I already knew where to find things needed for sales and how to navigate the system.”

How has your daily work changed since moving to sales support?

“There’s a lot more interaction with customers and suppliers in sales. It’s important to maintain good relationships, whereas in the warehouse, we mostly saw customers only if they came to collect their orders.”

In what ways does knowing the warehouse operations benefit you in your current role?

“Knowing the warehouse operations helped me get familiar with the products and the overall company operations. This knowledge has given me a huge advantage. When sourcing products for clients, my previous experience in the stores helped me understand the products better and know where to find specific items.”

What has been the biggest adjustment in moving from the warehouse to sales support?

“The biggest adjustment has been the increased level of communication required. In sales, I interact with customers and suppliers daily, which is different from my warehouse role where interactions were less frequent.”

What advice would you give someone from the warehouse looking to move into sales?

“Work hard and get familiar with the products in the warehouse, as this will give you a head start. Also, try to help the sales team as much as possible to get used to that side of the business and absorb as much information as you can.”

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned during your transition to sales support?

“Ask questions, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. This is the best way to learn. Also, observe those who have been in the industry for years; their knowledge is invaluable. It’s better to do things right the first time, so never hesitate to seek assistance.”
